Jayalalithaa alive, put on ‘life saving measures’; CM shows signs of response

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa passed away on Monday after suffering cardiac arrest, some local channels reported. She was 68. However, Apollo Hospital has denied the reports the CM’s death. On Sunday, just hours after AIADMK spokesperson CR Saraswathi had said that Jaya’s is fine and recovering, news of the CM’s death broke. Indian Express, in a tweet, confirmed the development.  Earlier, Apollo Hospitals in a statement had said, “The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu who is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai, suffered a cardiac arrest this evening. She is being treated and monitored by a team of experts including cardiologists, pulmonologist and the critical care specialists.” Jayalalithaa’s supporters outside the hospital broke down after hearing the news, ANI reported. In the latest statement, the Apollo Hospital spokesperson has said that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister ‘remains critical’ and is put on various life-supporting systems. For live updates, see below:
10:25 pm: Meeting of AIADMK MLAs to discuss key issues in the wake of the “grave” health situation of TN CM Jayalalithaa could be held later tonight, party spokesperson told ANI. The meeting was postponed earlier in the evening.

09:40 pm: Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu has apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the latest health condition of TN CM Jayalalithaa. The union minister visited Apollo hospital, Chennai and met the doctors in the evening.
08:45 pm: Bringing relief, AIADMK spokesperson C Ponnaiyan said there were some signs of improvement in TN CM Jayalalithaa’s health condition but she was still critical, reported NDTV. He was further quoted as saying that the meeting of the party MLAs at its headquarters in Royapettah had been indefinitely postponed.
08:40 pm: Home Minister Rajnath Singh ruled out the possibility of law and order problem in Tamil Nadu in the wake of Jayalalithaa’s health. Meanwhile, heavy security arrangement has been placed in Chennai to prevent any untoward incident. A  shutdown like situation is prevailing in the city with several petrol pumps, shops and other establishments downed shutters. People were also seen returning home early.
08:30 pm: Office of a TV Channel has been reportedly vandalised for broadcasting false news of TN CM Jayalalithaa’s death.
08:00 pm: The doctors and bureaucrats are holding a meeting over the health status of TN CM Jayalalithaa at Apollo hospital. Principal secretary and chief secretary of the state are present in the hospital.
07:55 pm: Neurologists keeping a close watch on TN CM Jayalalithaa’s health. Reportedly signs of response have been seen. AIIMS doctors to review her health condition in every one hours, said reports.
